JOIN THE BAND!
Are you looking for an opportunity to play challenging instrumental music with a great group of fellow musicians, and perform throughout the year for community events?
We welcome you to visit any Monday evening rehearsal and check out our music, director, and members.
Want more information? Here’s our FAQ for prospective members. The band is open to musicians 18 and older.
What type of music does the band play?
Depending on the season and the type of performance, the band plays a mix of symphonic classics, showtunes, big band, contemporary works, marches and seasonal music.
Is there a need for my specific instrument?
Concert band musicians are always welcome to join the band. Currently we have a particular need for trombone, French horn, and percussion players.
Where and when does the band rehearse?
The band rehearses Monday nights, 7:30-9:30, at Obi Studios, 320 Piercy Road, San Jose, CA. Check our rehearsal calendar for specific dates.
How good do I have to be to play in the band?
We encourage newcomers to sit in with the band for a rehearsal; this provides them with an opportunity to get a feel for the degree of difficulty and overall band culture. Auditions may be required at the conductor’s discretion.
How are individuals placed within their sections?
Part assignments within each section are typically finalized by the section leader. Some sections rotate parts, some do not.
What is the time commitment?
SJMB is a performance group, not a rehearsal band. As such, it is important that each member prioritize attendance at weekly rehearsals and scheduled performances. Should a member not be able to make a performance, the section leader and the Musical Director should be informed in advance.
Where is the band going to be performing?
Our performance schedule is found on our website's main page. Each year we perform three formal concerts and several informal events such as the Los Gatos Memorial Day celebration and the Morgan Hill Fourth of July Parade
What is the cost of membership?
Members are asked to make an annual voluntary donation. The Board establishes a member donations goal each September based primarily on the donation total achieved the previous year. Our annual donations drive runs from September to year-end, but donations are accepted at any time. Many employers have programs that benefit nonprofit organizations with matching donations, and members are encouraged to take advantage of these if possible.
